'Xiaomi Mi 4i OTA Update to Fix Overheating Issues'

xiaomi_mi_4i_white_screen_press_image.jpg
Xiaomi is expected to release an OTA (over-the-air) update for Mi 4i users in India this week. The system update (V6.5.5.0) is said to bring a fix for overheating issues.
Xiaomi India initially started rolling out the OTA update (V6.5.4.0 LXI) to the Xiaomi Mi 4i late last week; though cancelled the update as many users faced new issues after updating to the latest system update. According to a post by an MIUI device team member, a new OTA update (V6.5.5.0) will be rolling out with a fix for the overheating issues this week. Unfortunately, the post doesn't reveal an exact time frame for the OTA update arrival for the Mi 4i.
Jai Mani, Lead-Product Manager, Xiaomi India in a statement last week to Technology Personalized said, "We've heard from some Mi 4i users that their devices can get warm under strenuous conditions such as complex 3D gaming and benchmarking apps."
Mani explained that the company to address overheating issues on the Mi 4i optimised the thermal control algorithm to better regulate temperature. "The new thermal controls adjust frequency, voltage and the number of cores in use depending on the chipset temperature," he added.
Priced at Rs.12,999, the Xiaomi Mi 4i was launched last month amidst much fanfare in India. It features a 5-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) fully laminated OGS Corning Concore IPS display with a pixel density of 441ppi, and a Sunlight Display feature that optimises the display for visibility under bright light. The smartphone runs MIUI 6 based on Android 5.0 Lollipop. The Mi 4i is powered by a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor coupled with an Adreno 405 GPU and 2GB of RAM. The smartphone sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture and dual-tone flash. It also packs a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The Xiaomi Mi 4 bears 16GB of inbuilt storage, with no expansion slot. The Mi 4i includes a 3120mAh battery.
Xiaomi, in a move to improve its after sales service, announced a partnership with GadgetWood earlier this month. Under the partnership, GadgetWood promised a one-day repair service, which included pick and drop services for Xiaomi devices (smartphones and tablets) within a business day of placing the request for a fee of Rs. 99. The service is initially available in Delhi-NCR at the moment, but a Xiaomi spokesperson told NDTV Gadgets the company was "exploring opportunities to expand it to other cities in India."

Facebook’s Internet.org attracts 8 lakh users in India

Facebook has faced criticism for launching the platform as it is seen as violating the principle of net neutrality, which is against any priority being accorded to an entity in the Internet traffic flow because of payments to service providers such as telecom companies.

“We have 800,000 Internet.org users in India in just the supported seven circles. Internet.org is helping people connect to the Internet for the first time,” a Facebook spokesperson said.

About 20 per cent of Internet.org users were previously not active on mobile data and thus, Internet.org is bringing new people online, the spokesperson said.

Internet.org service is available for Reliance customers in seven telecom circles of Mumbai, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Internet.org claims to have made Internet available to over 800 million people in nine countries, including India.

“The goal of Internet.org is to allow more people to experience the benefits of being online... The Internet.org Platform aims to give people valuable free services that they can use to discover the entire wealth of online services and, ultimately become paying users of the Internet,” the spokesperson said.

The new Internet users acquired by Internet.org are now consuming over 100 MB of data a month outside of Internet.org, that is, paying for data from Reliance.

Recently, Facebook announced an open programme for developers to create services that integrate with Internet.org.

Internet.org states that it aims to bring 5 billion people online in partnership with tech giants like Samsung and Qualcomm.
